How to Become an Actor With No Experience

Is it your dream to become an actor on Television, Film or maybe Broadway? This can feel nearly impossible when you are struggling to get low or no-paying gigs…but it is possible. If you have the dedication, motivation, and drive to keep trying and keep pushing, then you too can learn how to become an actor with no experience.

The first thing you need to do is stop treating acting like a hobby. Once you start treating it like a business, like a career, then other people will begin to take you more seriously.

Next you need to remember that acting is a craft. It is an art and a skill. Most famous actors never stop taking lessons and workshops, so why should you stop? You should always be honing your skills by attending workshops and classes. An added benefit to this is that you will meet a lot of people, and this business is definitely a networking business!

Now, since you have no acting experience, now is where we get you some! An essential element to getting acting gigs is a headshot and resume. The resume will do nothing for you if it is blank. Start looking for acting gigs you can get to put on here. Great places to start are TV and film extras (sometimes this even pays pretty well!) and local community theaters. Another great place to go is a local college with a film program. Film students are always looking for actors willing to participate in their films. Just remember to ask for a copy of the finished product. This can help you make a ‘reel’ for yourself.

Once you have a bit of experience, go to where the action is. Most films and TV shows are cast and filmed in either New York or Los Angeles. If you live near these areas, you will have more opportunities to get a real gig. However, do not bother moving if you have absolutely no experience. It is very hard for a beginner to find opportunities in these areas.

Be persistent! If you ask any professional actor, they will tell you that they didn’t make it big at their first audition. You need to keep on auditioning until you and a role are a perfect fit. If you keep up on your craft and make sure not to burn any bridges, this will happen for you eventually.

By the way, like I said, it takes many auditions to get that great role. This means that you will be rejected. Remember not to take it personally. A lot of the time the producers or casting agents are looking for someone who looks or speaks a certain way and you cannot change that about yourself. Other times, they are simply hiring people they have worked with before. Just don’t give up!
